Should You Sell Your Gold Now or Wait?

Gold set a record in January 2026, then fell more than 20% by mid-year, and has climbed again through August. If you are holding jewellery, coins or bullion and asking Should I sell gold now, that swing is exactly what makes the decision feel impossible.

Here is the uncomfortable part. Nobody knows where the price goes next. Major banks with full-time research teams currently disagree by more than 30% on where gold finishes this year. If they cannot call it, no gold buyer can either.

So rather than tell you whether to sell gold or hold, this guide shows you where the price sits in Australian dollars, what is moving it, what waiting costs, and how to judge whether now suits your situation.

What This Guide Covers

What Is Driving the Gold Price

Should You Sell Your Gold Now or Wait

Four forces do most of the work.

  • Interest rates. Gold pays no interest, so high rates make savings accounts and bonds competitive. When cuts look likely, gold usually strengthens.
  • The Australian dollar. A falling Aussie raises the local gold price by itself.
  • Central bank buying. Official buyers have been net purchasers for well over a decade, and reserve managers surveyed by the World Gold Council overwhelmingly expect that to continue.
  • Uncertainty. Nervous markets push money toward gold. Returning confidence pulls some of it back out.

These rarely move together, and they often pull against each other. That is why deciding whether to sell gold or hold is harder than it looks.

Will the Gold Price Go Up or Down? The Forecasts Disagree

Most articles on this topic quietly pick a side. We would rather show you the actual numbers. Here is what major institutions forecast for gold by the end of 2026, in US dollars per ounce.

So, is now a good time to sell gold? The professionals are split, and anyone offering you certainty is selling something. That is why we will not make the call for you. We will tell you what your gold is worth today.

“People come in wanting me to tell them where the price is heading. I have been buying gold in Melbourne since 1999 and I still cannot tell you that. What I can tell you is what your gold is worth today, and I will show you the screen while we test it. Decide from there, not from a prediction.”

What Waiting Actually Costs You

The question is not only should I sell gold now, but what holding on actually costs. Waiting is not free, and this rarely gets a mention.

Every dealer buys below the market rate and sells above it. That gap is the spread, and it means the price has to move a meaningful distance before waiting leaves you better off.

You can see it in published figures. The Perth Mint currently lists a one kilogram Australian origin gold bar at $213,022 to sell and $203,500 to buy back, a difference of about 4.5% (Perth Mint live prices). On jewellery, the gap widens because scrap must be refined first.

There is a quieter cost too. Gold sitting in a drawer is doing nothing. If those pieces would clear a debt or cover a bill, the price you might get in six months is not the only number that matters.

When Selling Now Makes Sense, and When It Does Not

Strip away the market talk, and the decision usually comes down to your circumstances rather than the chart.
Selling Now Tends to Suit You If

  • You need the funds for something specific and reasonably soon
  • The pieces are unworn, broken or no longer to your taste
  • You would rather have certainty than sit through more volatility
  • You are holding scrap, which carries no collector premium worth waiting for

Waiting Tends to Suit You If

  • You have no immediate need for the money
  • You are comfortable with the price moving against you meanwhile
  • The piece may be worth more as jewellery than as metal and has not been assessed
  • You are still deciding what the item means to you

Only one of those points is about the market. Asking whether it is now a good time to sell gold is really a question about your circumstances. The best time to sell gold in Australia is usually whenever it genuinely suits you.

If You Inherited the Gold

Inherited jewellery brings two extra considerations. First, tax. The ATO treats jewellery as a collectable, and collectables acquired for $500 or less are generally exempt from capital gains tax. Above that, a gain may be taxable, though holding beyond twelve months can qualify for a discount (ATO guidance). Check your position with a registered tax adviser.

The second matters more. Some inherited pieces are worth considerably more as jewellery than as gold. Designer work, genuine antiques and certain collectable coins carry value well beyond their metal content. Have those assessed before anyone weighs them as scrap. We say this at the counter regularly, even though it costs us the sale.
